  18.      Welcome to the world of interactive simulation, and contratulations on
  19. choosing what we think is one of the best and most accurate flight simulators
  20. currently available.  Good flight simulators have been available for several
  21. years, but AV-8B HARRIER ASSAULT extends the concept by asking the player to
  22. play two roles:

  24.  [-->] As Commander of the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) you will run the
  25.        compaign of Operation Ocean Saber, a UN-authorised invasion of East
  26.        Timor in Southeast Asia.  Tasked with landing US Marines in hostile
  27.        terrain held by a well-armed and numerically superior enemy, you'll
  28.        make strategic and tactical decisions for the force as a whole...

  30.  [-->] As a squadron Pilot, you'll fly the AV-8B Harrier Jump jet from the
  31.        flight deck of the USS Tarawa, taking this revolutionary vertical
  32.        take-off fighter into combat against the armed forces of Indonesia,
  33.        the nation which seized East Timor in 1975

  35.      AV-8B HARRIER ASSAULT will place you in command of a naval task force
  36. consisting amphibious assault ships, an escort of powerfully-armed warships,
  37. transport ships, landing craft, eight thousand troops, their vehicles, stores,
  38. helicopters, and a squadron of McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II aircraft.
  39. Get the feel of what it's like to be in command of a powerful naval force able
  40. to project US military power on distant shores, then feel the thrill of being
  41. the pilot of one of the world's most effective close air support aircraft.
  42. But remember, if you fail in either role, the prisoners of war being herded
  43. behind barbed wire to await the journey home will be wearing US rater than
  44. Indonesian uniforms...

  46.      If you purchased AV-8B HARRIER ASSAULT expecting it to be a normal flight
  47. simulation, and don't want to play the role of task force commander, then
  48. don't worry.  Using expert systems technology built into the game, your
  49. computer will be able to run the campaign, selecting the objectives of the
  50. land and sea forces, positioning the ships, and specifying the missions for
  51. the AV-8B Harriers, leaving you free to enjoy flying a simulation whose flying
  52. charact- eristics and cockpit layout are closely modelled on those of the real
  53. aircraft.

  55.      The expert systems also control the actions of the enemy forces, who will
  56. respond to your decisions and tactics.  This allows you to play the game many
  57. times, trying different methods of dealing with a large defending force
  58. determined to fight for what it regards as Indonesian territory.  It won't be
  59. easy -- a decade of struggle against the East Timor resistance has honed the
  60. combat skills of the Indonesian Army...
